In Luke chapter 2, we encounter a powerful exploration of what happens when the Son of God enters the house of God for the first time. This passage reveals the beautiful obedience of Mary and Joseph as they follow Torah precisely, circumcising Jesus on the eighth day and presenting Him at the temple after Mary's purification period. What's striking is their economic reality—they could only afford the poor person's sacrifice of turtle doves, reminding us that poverty is not a sin but simply a circumstance of our fallen world. The heart of this message challenges the false prosperity gospel's assumptions and calls us to find contentment whether in poverty or plenty. We meet two remarkable figures, Simeon and Hannah, who model the audacity of hope while watching and waiting for decades to see God's promises fulfilled. Simeon's prophetic words are both beautiful and heartbreaking—he declares Jesus as light for the Gentiles and glory for Israel, yet warns Mary that a sword will pierce her own soul. This is where we encounter the first 'bad news' in Luke's gospel: Jesus came not just to unite, but to divide. His very presence causes some to rise and others to fall. The question for us becomes: Are we willing to watch and wait with the same dedication as Simeon and Hannah, trusting that God's timing is perfect even when our arms grow weary?
