What does it mean that Jesus is not just the Jewish Messiah, but the Savior of all humanity? Luke's genealogy in chapter 3 offers us a radically different perspective than Matthew's account. While Matthew traces Jesus back to Abraham to establish His Jewish credentials as the rightful King of the Jews, Luke does something unprecedented. He works backward from Jesus all the way to Adam, and in doing so, makes a stunning declaration: Adam is called the son of God. This isn't just a historical curiosity. It's a theological earthquake. Because Adam is the son of God, and we all descend from Adam, we are all God's offspring. This means Jesus came not just for one nation or one people group, but for every tribe, tongue, and language. The genealogy serves as the third witness to Jesus' divine sonship, following John the Baptist's testimony and the Father's voice at Jesus' baptism. Through 77 names spanning human history, we see that Jesus represents both the well-known and the unknown, the famous and the forgotten. His family tree includes those who walked closely with God and those whose walk was uneven, reminding us that Jesus came to save real people with real struggles. This is our heritage: we belong to a family that stretches back to the very beginning, and our elder brother came to reconcile the entire human family to God.
