God is exhibiting His control over His covenant with Abraham by unfolding the details of the patriarch family's destiny. In response, God expects two things: (1) confidence, a fierce faith, or bold belief in God's ability to fulfill the stipulations of the covenant; (2) God requires compliance on the family's part in keeping the covenant. How are we to understand the thorny doctrine of divine election? What is extraordinary about Abraham's compliance that we should emulate? What's the difference between skepticism and cynicism? Why is one acceptable and not the other?
